The youngest British & Irish Lion in the 2017 touring party, Maro Itoje defied his age to appear in all three Test matches of an historic drawn series against the All Blacks.

Before the series, Itoje was seen as a prodigious rugby talent having already conquered Europe (twice) with Saracens and proved himself a key cog in Eddie Jones’ England side that had dominated the previous two Six Nations Championships.

Always in the running to start for the Test side, the 22-year-old Londoner might not have been voted the Standard Life Investments Lions’ Lion of the Tour by his peers – that honour was reserved for Jonathan Davies – but he embodied the tourists’ spirit and dynamism.

After early Tour appearances against the Blues, the Crusaders and the Maori All Blacks – including scoring a try against the latter in Rotorua – Itoje was on the bench for the first Test against the All Blacks at Eden Park.

He provided real impact in the second half but could not prevent the Lions falling to defeat.

But by the time of the second Test in Wellington the Saracens star had forced his way into the starting XV.

He joined Alun Wyn Jones in the second row and was key to an epic victory – the All Blacks’ first loss at the Westpac Stadium since 2003 – and his name was sung long into the night as his chant to the tune of ‘Seven Nation Army’ became a Tour anthem.

And the England lock – who was in charge of the cuddly mascot BIL the Lion throughout the Tour as Stuart Hogg had been in 2013 – was retained to start the third and final Test as the Lions secured a 15-15 draw and a dramatic drawn series against the world champion All Blacks.
