Match Highlights: New Zealand 30-15 British & Irish Lions

The British & Irish Lions fell to a 30-15 defeat in the first Test of the series against New Zealand in Auckland, scoring two tries to three from the hosts.

The Lions almost made the perfect start when Elliot Daly went close in the opening minutes but it was New Zealand who took the lead through a Beauden Barrett penalty, followed by a try for Codie Taylor.

Trailing 13-3, Warren Gatland’s side responded just before half-time with one of the great Lions tries. Liam Williams attacked from his own 22, before Jonathan Davies and Elliot Daly combined to get right up to the New Zealand line. Davies then found Sean O’Brien on his shoulder in support, and the Irishman’s try made it 13-8 at half-time.

The Lions had chances early in the second half, but New Zealand held out before two Rieko Ioane scores extended their lead.

Rhys Webb crossed late on however, and now the Lions will look ahead to the second Test in Wellington and a chance to turn things around.
