Global ELVs on show

Saturday’s Mandela Challenge Match between South Africa and Argentina at Coca-Cola Park in Johannesburg will be played under the ‘global’ ELVs that came into force at the start of the month and not the Vodacom Tri-Nations ELVs.

Against Australia and New Zealand, the Springboks have been playing under a more comprehensive set of ELVs that will not be employed in the northern hemisphere this season.

The Boks will revert to the global ELVs against the Pumas, giving British and Irish fans the chance to see international rugby played under the new rules which they can expect to be watching when the domestic seasons kick-off in the next few weeks.

One of the major differences between the Tri Nations ELVs and the global ELVs being employed on Saturday is that, on most occasions this weekend under the global rules, the majority of penalties will not become short-arm free kicks.

The officials for the match between South Africa and Argentina (kick-off 2.05pm BST) are Wayne Barnes of England (referee), Matt Goddard and James Leckie of Australia (assistant referees) and Geoff Warren of England (Television Match Official).
