Lions line up for Smith

A host of former Lions tourists will don their boots once more early next month to help celebrate Tom Smith’s testimonial year.

As part of a series of events to celebrate his eight years with Guinness Premiership outfit Northampton Saints, Smith is hosting a unique fixture between an International Legends XV and a Saints Legends XV.

Among those expected to turn out for the event are Lions heroes Keith Wood, Austin Healey, Gregor Townsend, Allan Bateman, Phil Greening, Nick Beal, Scott Quinnell, Neil Jenkins and Paul Grayson.

All nine of the above players featured alongside Smith during his colourful Lions career and have since retired from the sport, unlike Smith himself who is currently the oldest player in English top-flight rugby.

Scotland and Lions prop forward Smith was the fulcrum of the Lions scrum in 1997 and 2001, playing in all six Tests against the Springboks and Wallabies.

He stepped down from international rugby in 2005 as his country’s most-capped prop, playing in two World Cups and making 61 international appearances.

Tickets for the match are available now from Northampton Saints, costing £15 for adults and £7 for children.

A share of the proceeds from the match will be donated to The Matt Hampson Trust and the Rainbow Hospice.
