Born in Talywain, Henry Jarman played club rugby for Newport and Pontypool before winning Test caps for Wales and the British & Irish Lions.

Jarman died a hero after saving the lives of a group of children by throwing himself into the path of a runaway coal truck that was heading towards the kids.

Along with Newport teammates Jack Jones and Charlie Pritchard, he was part of the Wales side who played the first ever international at Twickenham during the 1910 Five Nations Championship.

His form for Wales and Newport earned him a spot among Tommy Smyth’s 1910 Lions Tour to South Africa.

He played 17 times for the Lions in 1910 – including all three Test matches – and scored his only try for the Tourists in a win over Rhodesia.
