Cumberland rugby player Stanley Herbert Smith was selected as part of the Combined British team which travelled to Argentina in 1910.

This came despite having no previous international rugby experience – although this was the case for the majority of the team.

For Argentina, the tour marked the start of international rugby union and the test against the Combined British on June 12 was the first Test in the national team’s history.

The tourists however were in no mood for sentimentality and emerged triumphant 28-3 for the fifth of six victories on the tour.
