Video: Gatland and Spencer reveal team for Blues clash

Watch Tour Manager John Spencer announce the Lions team to take on the Blues while Head Coach Warren Gatland gives his comments on selection for the Eden Park clash.

“It’s an opportunity for those players sitting in the stand.”

After a narrow victory in their Tour opener against the NZ Provincial Barbarians, next up for the Lions are the Blues.

This will be the Lions first-ever clash with Kiwi Super Rugby opposition and Head Coach Gatland has changed all of the starting XV.

In come the likes of Dan Biggar and Rhys Webb in the half backs, Maro Itoje and Courtney Lawes in the second row and Ken Owens at hooker will captain the side.

“It’s an opportunity for those players sitting in the stand to go out against the Blues on Wednesday,” he said.

“We got off to a win in the first game, there were a few things to work on and we were a bit rusty, but we were pleased to get the first win anyway.

“It’s a great opportunity for Ken, he has been around for a while and captained the Scarlets this year and they had an incredibly successful season.

“He has taken up a leadership role within the camp as well so its a fantastic honour for him and a great opportunity as well.

“We are expecting a very tough, a very fast open game and with a big crowd at Eden Park hopefully it can hold us in good stead for a good performance.”
