Hat-tricks for hookers are usually a rare feat, but just three weeks into British & Irish Lions year there have already been two from home nations No 2s.

After Ospreys Sam Parry kicked off the season with a treble against Zebre, this weekend it was the turn of England’s Luke Cowan-Dickie.

The Exeter Chiefs youngster went over twice in the first half, and then completed his treble in the second against Harlequins in a 36-25 Aviva Premiership win at Sandy Park.

Cowan-Dickie, 23, has four England caps to his name, and showed his opportunism to score Exeter’s second try, pouncing on an overthrown lineout to crash over.

He followed that up with a more traditional hooker’s try soon five minutes before half-time, benefiting from a strong Chiefs rolling maul.

Leading 29-13 at the break, Cowan-Dickie extended the lead with another try from a rolling maul, as he takes on Thomas Waldrom’s role as try-poacher extraordinaire from close range.
