LionsWatch: Youngs shines in dominant Leicester win over Newcastle

Ben Youngs’ sparkling display for Leicester Tigers in their 30-3 demolition of Newcastle Falcons ensured he will be firmly in contention for a place on The British and Irish Lions Tour of New Zealand.

Tigers skipper Youngs capped a man-of-the-match performance with a scintillating solo try nine minutes from time as the Tigers overpowered the Falcons at Welford Road.

Ellis Genge scored a brace and Telusa Veainu also crossed as Tigers ran in a bonus-point victory.

The win strengthens Leicester’s grip on a top-four place in Aviva Premiership Rugby, with closest rivals Bath Rugby losing at Worcester Warriors.

And the British & Irish Lions head coach Warren Gatland will no doubt have been impressed with Youngs’ display as he prepares to name his squad for this summer’s Tour of New Zealand, due on Wednesday April 19.

As well as scoring one try and playing a key role in his side’s attacking play, Youngs also came to his side’s rescue with a try-saving challenge in the first half on his 201st appearance for the Tigers.

The 27-year-old scrum-half faces stern competition from the likes of Wales’ Rhys Webb and Conor Murray of Ireland for the No 9 jersey, but this performance showed the inventiveness he brings to the side, a weapon Gatland may feel he would like to have in his armoury.
