Despite still only being 26, Mako Vunipola was one of the more experienced British & Irish Lions players on the 2017 Tour, and built on his Test match credentials having featured in all three Tests in Australia.

He missed out on becoming one of the tenth set of siblings to compete together on a Lions Tour when brother Billy was forced to withdraw from the squad with a shoulder injury.

But his brother’s absence appeared to galvanize Mako, and the loose-head was instrumental on Tour – laying down a marker in the Tour match against the Crusaders.

He was part of a dominant forward performance on a greasy pitch in Christchurch in a display characterised by his persistent work-rate and powerful ball-carries.

Vunipola did enough to earn himself a starting role for the Test side, and he fulfilled that role in all three Tests in the series.

In the second Test, Vunipola returned to Wellington – the city where he was born and spent his early childhood years – as the Lions bounced back to level the series with a 24-21 victory.

And he then made an impressive sixth consecutive Test appearance for the Lions in a pulsating last contest at Eden Park.

Vunipola – whose father Fe’ao captained Tonga and appeared at both the 1995 and 1999 Rugby World Cups – made his England debut back in 2012 and also featured in all three Tests for the Lions in their historic series win against the Wallabies in 2013.

Aged just 22 in 2013 and with less than a year of international rugby under his belt, Vunipola was an integral part of the Tour especially after injuries to both Cian Healy and Gethin Jenkins.

He came off the bench in the opening victory in Brisbane before starting the second Test in Melbourne and played all 80 minutes.

And he was once again used off the bench in the third Test as the Lions clinched the series in style in Sydney.
